History
From Humble Beginnings to a Bold Future
2012: A Mission is Born
Harambee Youth Kenya began its journey in 2012, founded as a Transitional Living Community-Based Organization (CBO) with a simple but powerful vision: to offer vulnerable and displaced youth a safe place to rebuild their lives. In those early years, we provided shelter, basic care, and life skills support to young people facing homelessness and instability in Nairobi’s informal settlements. We witnessed firsthand the resilience and potential that exists in every young person—regardless of their background.
A Pause and Lessons Learned
However, like many grassroots initiatives, we faced immense structural and financial challenges. In time, the organization was forced to pause operations, but what never faded was the belief in the promise of Kenya’s youth.
2024: Rebirth with a Renewed Vision
In 2024, fueled by renewed purpose and lessons learned, we reestablished ourselves—not just as a support system, but as a comprehensive youth empowerment and development organization. We transformed Harambee Youth Kenya into a platform that addresses the deeper, systemic issues young people face: unemployment, lack of access to skills training, and financial exclusion.
From Relief to Empowerment
We’ve evolved from simply offering short-term aid to investing in long-term transformation, equipping young people not just to survive, but to thrive, lead, and shape the future of Kenya.
Our relaunch marked the beginning of a bold new chapter—one focused on building futures rather than just reacting to crises. Today, we operate through three flagship programs:
- Skills 4 Work Training – equipping youth with market-ready skills for the modern economy,
- Hustle Lab – connecting graducates of the skills 4 work programs directly to job opportunities, and
- Wezesha Microfinance – empowering young entrepreneurs to access micro grants and loans to start or grow their own ventures.
Looking Ahead: Building a Youth-Led Future
As we look ahead, our ambition is to reach over 1 million youth in the next decade—creating a generation of confident, skilled, and economically empowered leaders who will drive Kenya’s growth.
Because when we invest in youth, we invest in Kenya’s future.
